Making fun stuff that costs nothing!!
My little on just loves the DVD "Iron Giant" so we made a model with our "junk box". I let him choose what he wanted to do, not just inspiring his creativity but also teaching him that we don't always have to use the most modern technology to have fun.
I myself love crafting anyway. To save money we created all our own Christmas cards, Mother's Day cards and Birthday cards. People not only like the personal touch but realise the effort you've put in. It can also be a fun activity for you little one. When my toddler hands over his handmade cards he is so pleased with himself.
I also like Cross-stitch. At the moment when I have any free-time (free-time - what's that?) then I am currently cross stitching the alphabet for my son which is not just a colourful educational thing for his room but will also mean something when he gets older. You can look at the kits on Ebay.
If you look in your local area then many places offer messy play. Try looking at Netmums for things in your local area. If you're lucky enough then your local Surestart centre will have free activities on and are a great place to meet other Mums.
